Who was Ahmed Ibrahim Oweidat ? What was the cause of his death?
Ahmed Ibrahim Oweidat, 20, was killed following ‘undercover’ commandos, who shot him in the head throughout a mission near Jericho. According to the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli forces fatally shot a Palestinian man in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday.
According to the ministry, Ahmed Ibrahim Oweidat, 20, died at daybreak today in Aqabat Jaber camp in Jericho from critical wounds caused by live bullets to the head Soldiers shot at locals who confronted them, according to Palestinian news, after an undercover squad captured a young man from the camp, wounding three individuals.
The incident is being investigated, according to an Israeli army official.
Wafa reported that the Fatah movement in Jericho had launched a countrywide strike throughout the district, barring the health sector.
On Tuesday, similar raids were carried out in Jenin, Nablus, and Qalqilya, among other places on the West Bank.
With Oweidat’s killing, the overall number of Palestinians killed by Israeli troops in the West Bank this year has risen to 50.
Lutfi Labadi, 20, died of his wounds on Friday after being shot by Israeli authorities during army raids near Jenin earlier.
Hanan Mahmoud Khaddour, 19, was shot by Israeli soldiers on her way home from a school session in Jenin last week and died of her wounds. Shawkat Kamal Abed, 17, was shot near Ramallah’s northern West Bank city and died in hospital. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, when “undercover” forces invaded the camp overnight, two other men were wounded by live fire.
In a statement to AFP, Israel’s army said soldiers had carried out an overnight operation in Aqabat “to detain sought suspects.”
“During the operational activity, dozens of Palestinians violently rioted and attacked the soldiers,”
“The rioters burned tires and hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails at the soldiers. The soldiers responded with riot dispersal means and live ammunition.”
Conflicts involving Israeli soldiers and Palestinians are typical in the West Bank, which Israel has controlled since 1967, but there has been an uptick in the disturbance in recent weeks.
Since late March, 14 Palestinians and Israeli Arabs have been slain in attacks in Israel, while Oweidat is the 25th Palestinian killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank, including assailants.
His corpse was carried from a Ramallah hospital to Jericho for burial, covered in the Palestinian flag and that of President Mahmud Abbas’ Fatah faction. Hundreds of mourners stood outside the Oweidat family home in 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) heat.
Violent riots have also recently shaken the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, raising worries of another military conflict following an 11-day war in Gaza last year sparked by similar unrest.
