What is NATO?
NATO is a military alliance established in 1949 by 12 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France. The full name of NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Following World War II, NATO was primarily founded to address the threat posed by the Soviet Union.
In 1955, the USSR formed its military alliance, the Warsaw Pact, to confront NATO. With the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990, Warsaw was disbanded, and some Warsaw Pact countries joined NATO.
The NATO alliance is composed of 30 countries. The member countries of the alliance have agreed to come to each other’s help in the case of an armed attack against any member country.
What is NATO’s Purpose?
NATO’s objective is to execute the terms of the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed on April 4, 1949. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a collective security system. An attack on one member state is considered an attack on all system members, forcing a coordinated response.
All NATO member states are assured collective security as a result of this. In Brussels, Belgium, NATO’s headquarters are located. NATO member countries comprise two North American countries, 27 European countries, and one Eurasian country.
Is Ukraine a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)?
Ukraine is not a member of the NATO alliance. However, Ukraine is a NATO partner country, which implies it could join the alliance in the future.
